Ray Thomas shares Gunnai Ukan (Mother) Stories at the Latrobe Regional Gallery

A series of poignant works is currently on display at Latrobe Regional Gallery by Melbourne based artist Ray Thomas.

By Latrobe City Council - 28th August 2006 - Back to News

Gunnai Ukan (Mother) Stories depicts stories of the artist’s mothers early childhood and her memories of growing up on her grandparents farm in Lakes Entrance.

Considered to be one of Victoria’s most significant artists, Thomas incorporates Gunnai design and realist imagery in his work and is an inspiration to many young indigenous artists around Australia.

Thomas highlights places in Gippsland significant to him and his family, including the Lake Tyers Mission, Tambo River and Tidal River at Wilson’s Promontory. Thomas states that "It is my responsibility to show respect and acknowledgement and educate the world about the art and culture of the Gunnai of Gippsland".

Mainly self-taught, he became involved in painting through working on murals in the mid 1980’s with the Aborigines Advancement League and is inspired by indigenous artist Lin Onus and surrealist artist Salvadore Dali. He recently completed his Masters of Arts degree through RMIT University, Melbourne.

Gunnai Ukan (Mother) Stories continues until 24 September 2006.

Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
