They are off and running in the Power of Racing 2003The Power of Racing 2003 was launched at the Latrobe City offices in Traralgon on Wednesday by the Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss. By Latrobe City Council - 9th October 2003 - Back to News Cr Middlemiss said Latrobe City’s Spring Racing Carnival, the Power of Racing 2003, featured the best of country racing bringing together horse racing, the greyhounds and a host of sporting and community events.
"Latrobe City is delighted to be working in partnership with a wide range of sporting and community groups from across the Latrobe Valley to produce a regional event that has been recognised at a State level.
"The Power of Racing has grown significantly since representatives from Latrobe City Council, the community and the racing industry sat down to work out how they could produce an exciting program of events that would attract the local community and visitors to the region," Cr Middlemiss said.
"The Power of Racing is a unique partnership between the racing codes and the community. Gippsland Racing Inc, Glenview Park Turf Club, the Moe Development Group and Greyhound Racing Victoria – Traralgon, Churchill Saloon Bar, Traralgon Swimming Club, Glengarry Festival of Roses Committee, Church Street Fiesta Committee, Gippsland Go Kart Racing and the Gippsland Hill Climb Club are all working together to create a major festival for Latrobe," Cr Middlemiss explained.
President of the Glenview Park Turf Club, Peter Wight, said the Power of Racing was a sound concept which gave the people of the Latrobe Valley an opportunity to enjoy country racing at two first class venues over the Spring Carnival. "There are three key dates at Glenview Park this year including Ladies Day on 1 November (Derby Day), Dual Code Day on Friday 14 November and the Traralgon Cup on Sunday 7 December," Mr Wight revealed.
Councillor Middlemiss said that half-day public holidays have been gazetted for The Moe Cup on Thursday 16 October and the Dual Code Event in Traralgon on Friday 14 November.
"Latrobe City is committed to supporting important social and cultural events in the region. We value the presence of racing in Moe and Traralgon and have responded positively to requests from the community to retain half day public holidays in both areas," Cr Middlemiss said.
Chairman of Gippsland Racing Inc, Lance McMillan, said there was strength in unity and because all parties were prepared to work together there was still potential to grow racing at Traralgon and Moe.
"For the vast majority of people, racing is about getting together with your friends and having a good time. It is an opportunity to catch up with people you have not seen a while and celebrate life. This Carnival delivers great prospects for celebration and social gathering," Mr McMillan said,
"There are a range of packages available to businesses and people who want to attend the races. People are welcome to contact Gippsland Racing Inc to find out about marquee and sponsorship packages on offer at all four race dates," he added.
Gippsland Racing Inc can be contacted on 5127 1380.
Manager Events Latrobe, Janiene Ayre, said that the Power of Racing gave everyone an opportunity to celebrate the coming of Spring. "There are a great range of activities on offer and people have the opportunity to do something different whether enjoying the excitement of a close finish at the track, or taking time to smell the beautiful roses at Glengarry," Ms Ayre said.
A full program of events is available from Latrobe Citizen Service Centres, libraries, Council’s recreational centres, the Latrobe Visitor Information Centre and accommodation venues.
People wanting to find out more about the half day public holidays should contact their employer, employer group organisation or employee representative peak body.
