Prepare Your Place For Summer

Property owners across Bass Coast Shire need to prepare their properties for the upcoming fire danger period.

By Bass Coast - 7th December 2010 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Emergency Management Coordinator, James Bremner, says that despite the recent rainfall it’s important for residents to be prepared.

"We’re working on a range of fire prevention activities in the lead up to the fire danger period," said Mr Bremner.

"We’ve written to all vacant landowners advising them of their responsibility to cut grass and remove fire hazards.

"We will be starting property inspections this month. It's the responsibility of property owners to ensure their property does not pose a risk to others.

"If our Fire Prevention Officers find that the owner of a property is clearly in breach of their responsibilities they may be served with a Fire Prevention Notice," explained Mr Bremner.

"Fire Prevention Notices are only sent to properties where this process identifies a genuine threat of fire."

Council is also doing its bit to prepare for the fire danger period with the roadside slashing program already well underway.

"The program is in full swing in Wonthaggi and Inverloch and contractors will start some slashing works on Phillip Island and in rural areas shortly.

"We will also complete a second full slashing program in early 2011; however the weather will impact on when the works begin.

"Any additional roadside slashing required between the two programs will be assessed during weekly road inspections and completed as necessary," said Mr Bremner.

Council has been working with the CFA and the Municipal Fire Prevention Committee to develop Fire Prevention Plans for high risk coastal and bushland reserves.

"These plans identify high risk vegetation in reserves and foreshores and work is underway on maintaining fire breaks, fire access tracks and to remove ground fuel in high risk areas," said Mr Bremner.

"We are doing this in a sensitive manner to reduce any adverse affect to native flora and fauna."
