Latrobe City is supporting the Gippsland Innovation Festival, and is encouraging local organisations to get involved. The festival will run from 1 May through to 19 May and will celebrate innovation in regional life.

Chief Executive Officer of Latrobe City and Chairperson of the Gippsland Innovation Festival, Mr Paul Buckley, has said that the preparations for the Gippsland Innovation Festival are well underway.

"We encourage local organisations and businesses who want to showcase innovation in their business or community to get in contact with festival organisers as soon as possible," Mr Buckley said.

"This Festival is an opportunity to let people know about some of the great things that are happening in the Latrobe Valley. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Making Good Ideas Happen’," Mr Buckley said.

One of the highlights of last year’s highly successful festival was the ‘Webs for Business by Kids’ launch at Lavalla College in Traralgon. The program was sponsored by Telstra Country Wide and supported by the Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network and saw secondary school students work together with local businesses to help build websites to promote the business.

"The Gippsland Innovation Festival is about building community confidence and supporting innovation in the region. When business, community and government work together, everyone benefits," Mr Buckley observed.

‘Inspiring Young Women’ was another key event that brought successful businesswomen, community leaders and young women together to discuss potential careers and future directions.

Over 30 events have been planned for May, ensuring that the Gippsland Innovation Festival will retain its status as the largest regional innovation festival in Australia. Organisers plan to generate national and local media exposure for participants.

"Local Government has a key role in recognising, leading and stimulating innovation across all sectors. This festival is about encouraging and supporting innovation in our community, and it is about challenging our own perceptions of innovation and creating a culture that embraces excellence," Mr Buckley said.

"We want to ensure that our municipality is well represented within the national program, as part of the Gippsland Innovation Festival. We want to know about events that are planned for May 2006 which would benefit from linking with the program. We welcome expressions of interest from across the Municipality," Mr Buckley concluded.
