New Community Gallery Opens With ‘My Red Chair’

The Latrobe Regional Gallery has launched the new Hazelwood Community Access Gallery with an exhibition by Grant Hilton, an exciting, emerging local artist.

By Latrobe City Shire Council - 12th April 2007 - Back to News

Gallery Director, Jacqui Hemsley said that the Community Access Gallery had been relocated upstairs to a larger room.

"It is a bigger, warmer room with carpet and a wider area that is more conducive to displaying exhibits. We were a little restricted on what we could display in the former Community Access Gallery, due to size constraints, but this new area is much more versatile, meaning we can display more or larger pieces as well as sculpture," Ms Hemsley explained.

"To launch the new-look gallery, Newborough artist Grant Hilton’s exhibition ‘My Red Chair’ uses contemporary narrative, exploring his spiritual, physical and emotional being and his relationship with the landscape and how it affects his own existence.

"His dreamlike, almost surreal work features himself within our world, on his favourite chair, in the streets, in his studio or in nature. Mr Hilton’s style is fluid and unique and he uses his hands as his brush," Ms Hemsley said.

Mr Hilton remarks about his work: "I often say to myself, ‘Grant, your finger prints are all over this!’ I love that thought."

‘My Red Chair’ is currently exhibiting and will run until Sunday 15 April.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is open 7 days, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm. Admission is free.
