Traralgon East Community Centre Redevelopment Progressing

The redevelopment of the Traralgon East Community Centre is well underway with detailed plans, developed in conjunction with the local community, currently being reviewed by Latrobe City.

Latrobe City mayor, Darrell White, said that the Community Centre would provide a more suitable place for the community to gather.

"The redevelopment recognises the efforts of the Traralgon East community over many years. It will enable a more accessible, more appropriate, modern and welcoming community centre and will be a great asset for the Traralgon East community", Cr White said.

Latrobe City ward councillor, Ed Vermeulen, said the redevelopment would encompass a suite of upgrades to the facility.

"The redevelopment of the Cameron Street facility will include an extension to the building; upgraded kitchen and toilet facilities; a second external entrance; disability compliant access; a concertina divider for the large meeting room; additional storage; appropriate floor covering to enable community art; extra windows to increase natural light and surveillance; and water and solar capture measures.

"The project has been funded by the Department of Human Services Neighbourhood Renewal Program Fund; the Department of Planning and Community Development Community Support Fund and Latrobe City Council.

"In addition to this, the redevelopment will be partly funded by the sale of the Traralgon East Community Hall. Following community consultation, it was resolved at a Council meeting late last year, to sell the hall in order to progress the redevelopment of the new community centre. The auction of the Traralgon East Community Hall will be held on Friday 8 April 2011 commencing at 1pm," Cr Vermeulen said

As chair of the Traralgon East Community Centre Redevelopment Advisory Group, Cr Vermeulen said that it was important that the group met on a regular basis to help facilitate the redevelopment.

"The Advisory Group is made up of local residents and representatives of various local organisations. We have recently completed visits to other community facilities at Churchill, Rosedale and Inverloch to ensure we develop an appropriate space that meets the needs of the local community.

"After consultation with the local community, including the Traralgon East Community Centre Advisory Group and the Traralgon East Community Group, detailed plans have been drawn up for the redevelopment project and are currently being reviewed by Latrobe City, before going out to tender," Cr Vermeulen explained.

Carol Dalton from the Traralgon East Community Group said that the group will assist in distributing a regular newsletter to keep Traralgon East residents up-to-date with the progress of the redevelopment project and other local activities.

"It will be a vital tool for informing residents and giving them advance notice of possible participation in events, for example, the landscaping of the new Community Centre.

"It’s an exciting time for the local community and we look forward to the redevelopment taking shape," Ms Dalton concluded.
