Traffic safety improvements to be installed next weekTemporary kerb extensions along Cameron Street and Farrington Parade in the Traralgon East Neighbourhood Renewal area will be installed late next week as part of a traffic safety improvement scheme in the area. By Latrobe City Council - 23rd March 2006 - Back to News Latrobe City traffic planner, Ray Bright, said that the kerb installations, similar to those installed in Wirilda Crescent, are designed to further reduce the speed of traffic using the area.
"The speed limit for Cameron Street was reduced last August from 60kph to 50kph. Residents in the area were concerned about speeding motorists using the road, when there is a shop, maternal and child health centre and a preschool situated on the road," Mr Bright said.
"The temporary kerb extensions, which create narrower driving lanes, will be installed at eleven locations along Cameron Street and Farrington Parade starting next week. The kerb extensions will be reviewed after several months to determine whether they should be made permanent and whether flat-top speed humps will be installed too," Mr Bright said.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that Council had implemented these traffic calming measures in consultation with the local residents’ group recognising that pedestrian safety is paramount.
"Residents along the roads concerned are pleased that the speed restrictions will soon be put in place and users of the preschool, maternal and child health centre and shop are keen to see these safety measures installed.
"Drivers should automatically be recognising what is an appropriate speed on these roads, but these traffic calming devices are often needed to reinforce the message," Cr Price concluded.
