Call for nominations for Latrobe’s Sports Hall of FameAs part the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006 ‘Getting Involved Program’, Latrobe City is presenting a celebration of local sporting history and heroes, in the form of a travelling Latrobe City Sports Hall of Fame. By Latrobe City Council - 21st October 2005 - Back to News Nominations are now open for the Latrobe City Sports Hall of Fame, to celebrate our past and present local legends of sport who have excelled in their chosen sport as an athlete or official.
Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that the Sports Hall of Fame would allow members of the public to view and celebrate the successes of those in the community who have led the field in sport.
"We are calling for members of the community to nominate their local sporting heroes under two categories. The first, ‘Legends’, will include athletes who have achieved sporting excellence by competing at the highest level. The second category, ‘Members’, will include officials who have been part of a sporting team either as a coach, manager, mentor, official or umpire at the highest possible level," Mr Buckley explained.
"The nominees can be someone who is currently creating legends in their chosen sport or someone who has a past record as a high achiever. Past achievers can either be still active in their sport or retired. Past achievers can also be nominated for the Sports Hall of Fame posthumously," Mr Buckley said.
"In year-one, a maximum of five ‘Legends’ and five ‘Members’ will be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.
"We will celebrate these inductees with a Gala Evening Dinner to be held on the 15 March 2006 at the Moe Turfside Function Centre as part of the ‘Live Site’ celebrations at the Moe Racecourse, which coincide with the official opening of the Commonwealth Games," Mr Buckley said.
"This is a great opportunity for residents in Latrobe to recognise the sporting achievements of their fellow locals. Latrobe City already has major links with the Commonwealth Games, with the Live Site at Moe and by hosting basketball games in Traralgon. The Sports Hall of Fame will only add to our region’s growing, sporting reputation.
"It’s very important that families, friends, fellow sports men and women and sporting committees nominate potential inductees. Regardless of a local person’s achievement, if we don’t receive a nomination from the public on their behalf, we cannot consider that person for induction," Mr Buckley concluded.
The Sports Hall of Fame will travel between each of the major towns within the municipality to allow the community to view the displays.
A committee, made up of councillors and a broad cross section of the general public, will judge the entries according to the nine criteria outlined on the nomination forms. Evidence will be required that the nominated person resided in the municipality at some time in their life.
Nominations for the Latrobe City Sports Hall of Fame close on the Friday 9 December 2005. For further details, contact 1300 367 700.
