VCAT gives Aldi the go ahead

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has upheld the decision made by Baw Baw Shire Council in December to approve the development of an Aldi Supermarket in Queen Street.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 4th May 2006 - Back to News

Shire Chief Executive, Mr Glenn Patterson, welcomed the decision. "Council is pleased its decision has been upheld and the development can now proceed," said Mr Patterson

The company lodged a development application to build a supermarket with car parking for 75 vehicles on a site covered by 18-30 Queen Street in September 2005. The site is zoned Business 1 and is bounded by Queen St and Trinca Lane

"Council welcomes this development to Warragul and is pleased that it will go ahead," said Mr Patterson. "Not only is this development good for shoppers and businesses in the Shire, but it also provides extra retail employment opportunities, especially for younger people living in the area," said Mr Patterson.

"All of the dealings between Aldi staff, Council staff and Councillors have been very positive and cooperative.

"They have been keen to work with Council for the mutual goal of delivering the best outcome for Warragul," said Mr Patterson.

Council is hopeful that other proposed retail developments in Warragul will secure key national stores that will ensure Warragul is a competitive regional retail centre.

Council approved the Aldi development at meeting on 14 December 2005. Council believed that the developers had addressed key areas of concern including the traffic management, noise and car parking. This decision was upheld at VCAT on Monday, 1 May 2006. The appeal was determined largely on technical grounds.

The new Aldi building will be built on a concrete deck to allow the store to remain level to the street. The deck has been designed in such a way that future development could occur beneath the deck should Trinca Lane be developed in the future.

Total site area is 5,858 square metres. The proposed store will comprise of a retail net area of 976.square metres and a building net area of 1,453 square metres.
