The prize was announced at the opening of the Your Art Collection exhibition on Friday night. Dr Wendy Garden, curator of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and member of the judging panel, spoke on behalf of the panel about the rationale for their choice. The other members of the panel were Latrobe Regional Gallery Director Julie Adams and reknowned local artist, Colin Suggett.

"The decision was unanimous and the painting was a stand-out in a group of extremely competent artworks," said Dr Garden.

She congratulated the other short-listed artists, Ken Griffiths and Peter Walker, who also received their awards on the evening. Each award is worth $1000.

Dr Wendy Garden likened the Council’s Your Art Collection program as a bit like football. "There were several rounds during the year, where the artists received their awards at community art shows and three artists were shortlisted for this award. This prize exhibition is the grand final." She also congratulated Council on their incentive.

The Mayor, Cr Le Serve, opened the exhibition congratulating the work of the Artist’s Society of Phillip Island in assisting with all aspects of staging the exhibition.

She also spoke of the importance of the community groups who hold art exhibitions and their role in assisting Council to grow the art collection.

A happy crowd attended the opening and enjoyed the sounds of Little Oberon and the food by the Red Cross.

The exhibition of fourteen artworks by these talented artists will be on show until Sunday, 8 September at the Cowes Cultural Centre, open from 10.00am to 4.00pm each day except Monday and Tuesday.
