Labor for Gippsland has welcomed Prime Minister Gillard’s announcement that the Federal Election will be held on August 21.

Mr McCubbin said he was committed to better schools and hospitals, a strong economy and a sustainable Gippsland.

"I seek the support of the voters in Gippsland to be part of a Gillard Government that will move Australia forward," Mr McCubbin said.

"The choice for voters is clear. Julia Gillard is committed to moving Australia forward while Tony Abbott will take us back to the days of cuts in health and education that Australian families rely on, and back to the worst aspects of WorkChoices.

"The Gillard Government will deliver a strong economy and bring the budget to surplus by 2013.

"In health, we will fund 3,000 new nursing training places and 1,300 GPs and GPs in training over the next three years.

"And Julia Gillard believes in a sustainable Australia, not a big Australia, and that's why she'll invest record amounts in solar and other renewables."

Mr McCubbin said the Gillard Government was determined to move forward and deliver better education.

"I share the Prime Minister’s belief that every child deserves the chance of a quality education and in preparing kids for jobs by delivering trades training centres in schools," Mr McCubbin said.

"The Gillard Government will also continue to install computers in schools and establish a national curriculum with a focus on the basics."

"I would encourage all local people to check their enrolment is up to date and for young voters to make sure they are enrolled so they can have their say," Mr McCubbin said.
