Funding Boost Will Improve Gippsland Roads

Gippsland roads will be improved thanks to a substantial Coalition Government funding boost in the forthcoming State Budget, according to The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Danny O’Brien.

By Danny O'Brien MP - 29th April 2014 - Back to News

An additional $130 million funding will be delivered over four years for road maintenance and restoration works, Mr O’Brien said.

"Importantly, this is above the base level of funding for roads and will take total spending on roads in 2014-15 to over half a billion dollars," Mr O’Brien said.

"This is important additional funding that will go towards repairing, re-sealing, re-sheeting and general improvement of our roads network."

Treasurer Michael O’Brien and Roads Minister Terry Mulder have announced $50 million will be allocated to capital restoration works while another $80 million over four years will go towards road maintenance and resealing.

"This is additional funding that will go towards fixing potholes, improving road surfaces and making Gippsland roads safer," Mr O’Brien said.

"In the short time I have been in Parliament, roads have been one of the issues raised with me most frequently, particularly in South Gippsland. Last week I met with local VicRoads senior officers to discuss funding issues.

"I am very pleased to be part of a Coalition Government that recognises the need for more resources for our road system in Gippsland. My Nationals’ colleagues Peter Ryan, Russell Northe and Tim Bull have been fighting for more funding and the Government is delivering."

Mr O’Brien said the Coalition had already delivered additional road funding through the $160 million Country Roads and Bridges Program and $170 million over three years for capital works, as well as $45 million in 2012 for the Repair and Restore program following extensive floods.

Roads spending in 2014-15 will be over $500 million, well above the $384 million allocated by Labor in its last budget.
