Liberals Support ‘No Toxic Waste’ Road Show

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis has urged everyone living along the Calder Highway, to say ‘no’ to the Bracks Government’s plans to create a toxic waste dump in Victoria’s food bowl.

By Philip Davis - 12th December 2005 - Back to News

Mr Davis said the Liberal Party supported the Save The Food Bowl Alliance’s road show taking place tomorrow, where those living along the Calder Highway are being encouraged to make submissions to the Environment Effects Statement (EES).

"Every person living along the Calder Highway corridor will be affected by the toxic waste dump the Bracks Government is trying to force on Nowingi," Mr Davis said.

"I encourage as many residents and businesses as possible in Sea Lake, Culgoa, Wycheproof, Charlton, Wedderburn Gisborn and Kangaroo Flat to take a few minutes to speak to representatives of the Save The Food Bowl Alliance when they visit their towns tomorrow.

"If you miss the road show and you live in or close to any of these towns, I urge you to make contact with the Alliance to find out how this toxic waste dump will affect you.

"If the Bracks Government is allowed to build this dump, a large portion of Victoria’s toxic waste will be transported through your communities.

"If something was to go wrong during the transportation process, the consequences could be dire."

It is also another broken promise by the Bracks Government, which pledged it would "act strongly to safeguard the community against risks from the storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods and hazardous material." (Labor New Solutions - February 1999)

Toxic waste will now be transported more than 550km from Melbourne to Mildura. The longer distance putting more communities at risk.

Mr Davis said it was imperative that those concerned about the toxic waste dump express their opinion by making a submission to the EES.

"Country Victorians need to shout loud and clear that they do not want this toxic waste dump," he said.

"Making a submission to the EES is the correct process to do this.

"The Bracks Government cannot ignore EES submissions.

"Country Victoria needs to stand up to the Bracks Government and tell them enough is enough."
