Improving the health and wellbeing of Victoria’s next generation was the focus of a Latrobe City Council-partnered event, the VicHealth Bright Futures and Grant round Regional Roadshow, held in Traralgon today.

Representatives from community organisations, local businesses, government, service providers learned about five ‘mega-trends’ that will impact the wellbeing of young people over the next 20 years, the opportunities these trends present and VicHealth’s new grant round.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, councillor Michael Rossiter, said Council was committed to taking a proactive approach to improving the wellbeing of young people.

"We’re pleased to host monthly meetings of the Latrobe Youth Network, where local organisations, government and service providers and schools discuss emerging issues impacting on young people in our community."

"The Latrobe City Youth Council and SK8 Park Youth Leadership program which organises events at local skate parks are other positive ways that Latrobe City engages with young people."

Cr Rossiter commended the work of local secondary schools, who were working closely together and offering a range of programs and curricula focused on building resilience.

"They are also working closely with other organisations and support services, such as The Smith Family, as well as local industry, to better coordinate interventions and actions, as well as build connections within communities and workplaces."

Today’s event follows on from VicHealth’s Mental Wellbeing Strategy, which identified new approaches for building resilience in young people and working in key settings to make a positive difference and create a bright future for young Victorians.

As part of this strategy, VicHealth and the CSIRO recently released Bright Futures: Megatrends impacting the mental wellbeing of young Victorians over the coming 20 years, which informs and influences the issues we need to consider, and ways in which we work with young people, to better prepare them for the future.

The Bright Futures report raises questions about how Victoria can educate and prepare young people to be resilient and adaptable in a world characterised by decreasing job security, the fluidity of globalisation and technology, increasingly diverse societies and over-exposure to the internet.
