Positive Feedback At Orbost Community Consultation

East Gippsland Shire Councillors and senior staff conducted a very productive Community Consultation session in Orbost last week, with a number of local issues raised.

The Orbost Chamber of Commerce advised Council that Telstra broadband may become available in the near future. Mayor Harvey Bates indicated the Shire would support moves to provide this Telstra service to the Orbost region, along with other outlying towns in the Shire.

The future of the historic Post Office was a major talking point and Council said it would take note of the many comments from the local community in their efforts to have the building kept and restored. Cr Bates said the matter would be referred to the East Gippsland Shire Heritage Study Steering Committee.

A resident raised the issue of recent tree planting in Salisbury Street, believing that the trees are unsuitable for a number of reasons including their potential height. Council will inspect the trees and discuss future plantings.

Councillors received several positive comments on other issues including the beautification at Marlo; the Rural Learning Centre; the sealing of the Conran – Cabbage Tree Road assisting tourism; the positive promotion of the East Gippsland Rail Trail; the completion of the Marlo Jetty works; and the role of the Visitor Information Centres.

"It’s pleasing to see such a proactive group of Orbost residents taking time out to not only attend the Community Consultation, but provide valuable information to Council," Cr Bates said.

"Council is obviously happy to hear such positive comments from our local community.

"We want to hear the positives, and any ideas the community may have for the benefit of their own town and the region in general," Cr Bates said.
