Crime up 21 per cent in Latrobe CityDaniel Andrews refuses to take action to fix the violent crime rate in Victoria, Member for Morwell Russell Northe has said. By Portal Admin - 19th June 2017 - Back to News New figures released by the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency today show crime across the Latrobe LGA rose 21.11 per cent since December 2014, up from 11,964 total offences at December 2014 to 14,490 offences at March 2017.
"Our community has been abandoned by the Premier for Melbourne while the crime rate spirals out of control," Mr Northe said.
"Offenders have been emboldened by the Andrews Labor Government’s watered-down bail laws, weakened sentencing and cuts to frontline police numbers."
Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bathsaid the community was less safe with Daniel Andrews' soft on crime approach.
"The Latrobecommunity isn’t immune to the crime wave sweeping the state under Daniel Andrews," Ms Bath said.
"Daniel Andrews has done nothing for over two years as crime has continued to rise."
In Morwell, there was a 15.6 per cent increase in crimes against the person, from 775 offences in March 2016 to 896 in March 2017.
"Daniel Andrews can’t fix the violent crime rate by continuing to give repeat violent offenders four, five or six chances before sending them to jail," Shadow Minister for Community Safety Edward O’Donohue said.
"Until this Premier starts to put the rights of innocent Victorians before the rights of violent criminals, we will not see any decline in violent crime rates.
"Only the Liberal National Coalition have a plan for stronger sentencing, tougher parole conditions and a return to the principle that bail is a privilege not a right for violent offenders."
