Shire’S First Meeting Under Wider Community Plan

East Gippsland Shire’s first meeting under its recently announced broader Community Consultation Program will be held in Lakes Entrance tomorrow night (Tuesday 21 February).

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 21st February 2006 - Back to News

The meeting will start at 5.30 pm in the Meeting Room in the Mechanics Hall, Mechanics Street, Lakes Entrance.

Until now East Gippsland Councillors and senior staff have visited the more remote parts of the Shire including Omeo, Orbost, Tubbut, Bendoc, Bemm River, Cann River and Mallacoota every six months.

However, members of communities closer to Bairnsdale including Paynesville and Metung have had to attend the Shire’s Corporate Centre in Bairnsdale

Group Manager Community Kate Nelson said the purpose of the revised community consultation program was to provide a face-to-face opportunity for members of the community to discuss matters with Councillors and staff.

"This has worked very well for the remote communities but consultations with other groups needs upgrading," she said.

"As well as continuing the remote areas program we now plan to visit the key centres closer to Bairnsdale and provide the opportunity for everyone who wishes to have an informal chat."

Ms Nelson said the program is called "Face:Face" and for the first hour it will be completely casual where Councillors and staff mix with the community and discuss matters on an informal basis," she said.

"This means that people can drop in after work and talk informally with Councillors about community activities and issues," she said.

"At 6.30pm Council officers will make a formal presentation concerning details of Council’s priorities, projects and consultation processes many of which will directly interface with the local area.

"At 7.00pm the formalities would give way to informal discussion and consultation where people can continue informal to discuss issues raised in the presentation over a ‘cuppa’.
