Sign Off for Traralgon Creek Environment Improvement Plan

Partners in the Traralgon Creek Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan (NEIP), which is aimed at bringing about a long term improvement to the Traralgon Creek and its catchment, signed off on their document at a launch ceremony on Thursday.

By Latrobe City Council - 9th October 2006 - Back to News

The launch, which was held in the function room in the civic precinct in Traralgon, involved the Traralgon Creek NEIP steering committee comprising representatives of Latrobe City, West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, Department of Sustainability and the Environment, the Environment Protection Authority, major industries such as Loy Yang Power, International Power Mitsui Loy B and Grand Ridge Plantations, landowners, environmental groups and community representatives.

The steering committee has spent more than eighteen months in a consultative process which has resulted in a detailed plan of action for improving the environment of Traralgon Creek.

In welcoming the representatives to the function, Latrobe City’s general manager city marketing and development, Peter Quigley, said that all parties in the project had worked in a spirit of cooperation and with a common goal to develop a long-term plan for the environmental improvement and maintenance of the Traralgon Creek catchment.

"Through the NEIP process there has been a requirement to not only come up with ideas, but for partners to make significant commitments to carry out specific tasks," Mr Quigley explained.

"This document is now required to be submitted to the Environment Protection Authority Board for approval, and during its implementation, ongoing monitoring and review of the plan will take place," he said.

"Already a number of significant actions along the creek have taken place including the removal of exotic vegetation, fencing of the creek in many areas and planting of native vegetation. This work by the West Gippsland Catchment Authority, the power companies and landowners will continue with new initiatives to be implemented," Mr Quigley said.

Commenting on the launch, Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said council was particularly pleased to be a sponsor of the Traralgon Creek NEIP as it was the first such project to be carried out in Gippsland.

"During the time the plan has been developing, there has been an increased awareness of the Traralgon Creek and its importance to the community. Already service clubs, schools and other community groups are taking initiatives to improve and maintain the creek and these indications of local ownership and commitment are very encouraging. I congratulate all those involved and look forward to other ventures of this nature, such as the NEIP being developed for the Morwell River, reaching a similar stage in development," Cr Price said.
