Gippsland Planners Share Concerns

Bass Coast Shire Council hosted the Gipps.Plan Regional Planning Forum last week, which saw planners from across Gippsland come together to share their ideas and concerns.

The forum provided valuable opportunities for local planners to engage and network with Victorian Government and other local planning authorities and influence future planning directions within the region.

A key topic of the forum was the Victorian Government’s Streamlining the Planning System project, which seeks to identify opportunities to remove unnecessary planning processes and duplication for local councils.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and project chairperson, Elaine Carbines, spoke about the project and ran a workshop on potential options for improving the planning process.

Bass Coast Strategic Planning Coordinator, Lisa Dunlop, also informed the group about a local project to introduce the National Heart Foundation’s ‘Healthy by Design’ guidelines, as well as Council’s Affordable Housing Strategy, into the Bass Coast Planning Scheme.

The project aims to provide guidance for planners on healthy design and safety aspects when they are assessing planning applications.

Bass Coast Planning Manager, Hannah Duncan-Jones, updated the group on the level of planning activity being experienced in the municipality – the 12th busiest in the State.

In addition, the room was treated to presentations by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) on the Native Vegetation Framework and Regional Development Victoria on the Moving Forward Statement.

The Gipps.Plan Forum is an initiative of the Regional DSE office and is held three times a year, rotating between all Gippsland Councils and DSE. The forums are attended by planners, planning consultants and referral authorities.
