The Chief Executive Officer of the East Gippsland Shire Council, Mr Steve Kozlowski has told Regional Development Victoria representatives that the region is enjoying strong economic growth.

Addressing a group that advises Minister for Regional Development John Brumby, Mr Kozlowski said that the value of tourism, food manufacturing, agriculture, forestry and fishing was worth just on $700 million to the region’s economy.

He said that industry was growing and employment prospects were improving.

"Vegco, for example, aims for a workforce of 400 including 270 permanent and 130 casual staff," he told the delegates.

Mr Kozlowski also told the group that talks between two sawmilling companies could lead to amalgamation and the formation of the largest hardwood sawmill company in the region.

He also pointed to the possible resumption of gold mining in Glen Valley near the NSW border.

Making his presentation at the Paynesville Library/Business Centre, Mr Kozlowski reviewed major projects that had been completed in the Shire including the East Gippsland Livestock Exchange, Regional Landfill and Recycling Centre, Top Crop Gain and Fodder Project, the expansion of the processed vegetable industry and progress with the upgrade of the Bairnsdale Aquatic Centre.

He also acknowledged that there were issues including timber resource security, water availability, some skilled labour shortages and poor telecommunication in remote areas that needed to be addressed.

"Overall the region is enjoying improved prosperity and there will be steady population growth and economic development," he assured the party.
