Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, explained that the ‘Hall of Fame’ is a system of awards that recognises both on-field and off-field achievement.

"The Latrobe City Sporting Hall of Fame serves to recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to the development of a variety of sports at a local, nation and international level," Cr Price said.

"The inductees named tonight have come from a wide spectrum of the sporting community and may have served the game in many capacities – as players, administrators, coaches or as umpires or judges."

Displays were unveiled at the induction revealing past history, achievements and anecdotes on the inductees together with photographic images.

Jeff Bond was inducted for his work as a sports psychologist, and the late Joe Carmody for his service to sport as an athletics coach. Vern Curnow was inducted for his service to athletics, Don Di Fabrizio for his contribution to soccer, and John Quinlivan for his work in pistol shooting.

Una Holt was inducted as a ‘Legend’ into the Hall of Fame for her career in lawn bowls, The late Ted Kalkhoven for his career in the 70s and 80s in volleyball, Rocco Mattoli for boxing, Andrew O’Sullivan for athletics, and Bernie Quinlan for Australian Rules football.

Cr Price said the initial ten inductees are a select group of people. "No doubt we have just scraped the surface in terms of recognising our local champions, and to this end, Latrobe City will call for nominations every two years and although this group will remain ‘the elite’, we expect that we will induct more people in the future," Cr Price said.

The Hall of Fame announcements coincided with the opening of the Commonwealth Games, and in particular, the opening of the Gippsland Live Site at the Moe Racecourse. Funding has been provided for Latrobe City’s Hall of Fame through the State Government's ‘Get Involved’ grants program.

Latrobe City's Sporting Hall of Fame displays will now travel between each of the major towns within the municipality to allow the community to celebrate the inductions.
