Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said this was a major move forward in the Bairnsdale City Oval Master Plan recently adopted by Council.

"It will provide the city with a top class upgraded facility that will have the potential to attract major sporting events to East Gippsland," she said.

Cr Rowe said Council was also pleased that the Bairnsdale Senior Citizens Club Inc would be one of the principal user groups of the new facilities.

"They will now have an ideal, comfortable and up to date venue for their activities," she said.

Cr Rowe said the Bairsndale City Oval was about to become the equal of any regional facility in the State and would be better than most.

"The new building will be a function room that will cater for 400 people standing, or 220 seated," she said

"This is the kind of modern support infrastructure necessary to attract major sporting events."

Works will also include renovations to the existing building including offices and a meeting room, as well as facilities for netball players, upgrades to the change room facilities and a covered wicket for the cricketers.

Of the total investment, $90,000 will be used to provide new lighting for the playing field and future developments are likely to include playgrounds, upgraded car parking and improved spectator facilities.

Cr Rowe said that the Shire has also agreed to increase its financial contribution to the proposed works by $400,000 to a total of $543,000.

"This is what was allocated to provide for the senior citizens and because they will now be accommodated in the new oval facility, the benefits of this money have been spread more widely," she said.

"The Senior Citizens Club has joined the Bairnsdale Committee of Management Inc. and the Bairnsdale Football Netball Club Inc. as a signatory to a ‘Framework of Co-tenancy’ document that secures their tenancy."

Other contributors are Sport & Recreation Victoria, $443,000; Bairnsdale Football Club $200,000; Bairnsdale City Oval Committee of Management, $75,000; Community Water Grants, $29,000.

At their recent meeting Councillors accepted a tender from local builders N J and M N Brooker Pty Ltd who expect to start work in June with a completion date of November. East Gippsland Shire’s Mr Michael Veldhuizen will manage the project.
