Cameron Street preschoolers welcome new playground

A new look playground area and new playground equipment has ensured a fun start to the new school year for the children at Cameron Street preschool.

By Latrobe City Council - 18th February 2005 - Back to News

The children were welcomed with a completely redeveloped and landscaped playground which integrates into nearby Priestly Park. A circuit path provides a great surface for children’s trikes and bicycles, areas have been set aside for creating vegetable or flower gardens, and the existing shed has been relocated to a more appropriate position within the grounds.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said the existing play equipment had also been upgraded with a new climbing frame, slide and swing set installed.

"These types of playground installations are important for the healthy development of preschool children. They learn the importance of balance, co-ordination of movement and improve their strength and mobility," Cr Lougheed explained.

Cr Lougheed said the redevelopment of the preschool play area had been done in conjunction with the Traralgon East residents group and Priestly Park project committee.

Extensive public consultation was undertaken, resulting in plans for the park area behind the preschool to be redeveloped and upgraded through a Traralgon East Neighbourhood Renewal program, funded by Latrobe City and the Department of Human Services.

"The redevelopment of Priestly Park into a more open and visible family park area gave Council the opportunity to redesign and upgrade the preschool playground area which backs onto the park," Cr Lougheed said.

Cr Peter Tyler added that the public park area would be redeveloped over the coming months to provide a safer, more open environment for local families.

"The layout of the park meant that there were some corner areas that were out of the line of sight. This was a perceived safety issue and the new design eliminates these corners providing a more suitable, open area," Cr Tyler explained.

"The existing play equipment for young children will be moved further into the park area and a new playground for older children will be installed too. The new design also incorporates picnic and barbecue facilities, pathways and lighting," Cr Tyler said.

"Local groups, including children from the Traralgon Secondary College, and the Cameron Street Preschool Committee, Traralgon East Neighbourhood Renewal Residents Group, Police and Traralgon Neighbourhood House were involved in the plans for this new playground area. This new facility at Priestly Park will be a great addition to the area, and many children who attend the preschool will be using this new park outside of preschool hours," Cr Tyler concluded.
