Celebrations announced for Reconciliation Week Reconciliation Week ceremonies will be taking place around Latrobe City, starting with the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags being raised at a ceremony at the corporate headquarters in Morwell, at 10.30am on Friday 27 May. By Latrobe City Council - 20th May 2005 - Back to News The celebrations also include the annual community barbeque at the Fun Shed in Morwell, corner Princes Drive and Monash Way on Friday 3 June from 11am.
Latrobe City’s Koorie Liaison Officer, Leonie Green, said that the annual community barbeque had become a popular event in the municipality offering an opportunity for people from all cultural backgrounds to get together and celebrate their diversity.
"This free event has grown from strength to strength each year. Music and children’s entertainment are provided, together with the opportunity to taste some exotic fare such as barbecued kangaroo steak, emu burgers and bush tucker sausages," Ms Green explained.
Latrobe City Councillor, Lisa Price, said that Council’s Statement of Commitment to Indigenous People recognised that the indigenous people of Latrobe City were the traditional occupants of the Braiakaulung country.
"During Reconciliation Week, we are recognising the history of Latrobe City as well as celebrating our future as a culturally diverse and vibrant community," Cr Price said.
Cr Price added that Latrobe City Council wanted to promote understanding and respect between different cultures and backgrounds both in this municipality, and in society as a whole.
"Reconciliation has become a widely-respected term, describing the process of developing better relations between non-indigenous people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In Latrobe City we have a large indigenous population as well as migrants from other countries around the world. By celebrating Reconciliation Week we are connecting people of all races and backgrounds and promoting our diverse community spirit," Cr Price concluded.
Both the flag raising ceremony and community barbecue have been organised by a number of organisations including Council, the Central Gippsland Aboriginal Health and Housing Cooperative, the Braiakaulung Advisory Committee, the Department of Human Services, and the Department of Education and Training.
