Wellington Delighted With Latest State Funding For Rosedale Community Centre

Wellington Shire Council, with support from the local community, has just won a further $200,000 from the State Government towards a new $2.4 million multi-purpose community centre for Rosedale.

This latest funding, announced today by the Minister for State and Regional Development John Brumby during a visit to the town, has been provided through the Small Towns Development Fund.

It adds to $250,000 from the State Government’s Department of Human Services for the new pre-school component, along with $20,000 raised by the local community over several years and some $320,00 from the council. In addition $270,000 has been received from the Federal Government towards the initiative.

The latest $200,000 will fund the construction of meeting/activity rooms, occasional care rooms, a kitchen, an office, toilets and parking facilities.

This much-needed new multi-purpose community centre will include provision for the pre-school, a library, neighbourhood house, community health services, as well as facilities for local senior citizens and other community groups. It means that for the first time the people of Rosedale will be able to benefit from all these services under one roof – providing much more convenient access to a broader range of community support.

Wellington Shire Council has also submitted applications for further funding towards this project. A Regional Partnerships application for $480,000 has been lodged with the Federal Government, while a Community Support Grant of $300,000 is being sought from the State. Decisions on both are expected by the end of June, with the design work on the centre, and subsequent construction work, set to start early in the coming financial year 2004-05.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "We greatly appreciate this latest funding announcement. It’s a fantastic outcome following all the hard work and commitment devoted to the fundraising effort by the Rosedale community and officers from this council, as well as the active support provided by our local members for the initiative.

"Our priority now is to press on with the concerted drive for further funding and to get this eagerly-awaited project underway as soon as possible."
