Walking School Bus Going From Strength To Strength

Latrobe City’s Walking School Bus has become an added bonus for parents enrolling their children at Kosciuszko Street Primary School

By Latrobe City Council - 24th June 2005 - Back to News

At the launch of Kosciuszko Street’s second Walking School Bus last Friday, Latrobe City’s Walking School Bus Co-ordinator, Elizabeth Tomlins said it had become a very popular part of the school program and a drawcard for parents.

Ms Tomlins said that Walking School Bus programs had gone from strength to strength since the launch in November 2003, with primary schools in Churchill, Morwell, Traralgon and Moe taking part in the scheme.

"The second walking school bus at Kosciuszko Street has 12 students walking and nine parents and teachers taking part on a rostered basis. Parents, teachers and children have included the program as part of their regular exercise routine," Ms Tomlins explained.

Ms Tomlins added that in other news, Morwell Park Primary School’s Walking School Bus acted as a guard of honour at the ministerial launch of the Morwell East Neighbourhood House. Students were presented with Latrobe City showbags.

Ms Tomlins said that Elizabeth Street Primary School in Moe should be relaunching their Walking School Bus during the fourth term and recently held an egg and bacon barbecue at Moe Police station.

"The idea was to encourage students to sign up for the Bus and for police to volunteer their time to walk with the children," Ms Tomlins said.

Both Ms Tomlins and John Turner, Vice Principal at Churchill Primary School attended the VicHealth Walking School Bus Symposium last month. Mr Turner also gave a live interview for Channel 7’s Sunrise program, talking about the extent of community involvement and partnerships that have been developed with the Walking School Bus program.
