Getting Involved in Youth Space Latrobe

Young people from the Latrobe Valley invited to join the first Youth Governance Committee for Youth Space Latrobe.

The Andrews Labor Government is urging young people from the Latrobe Valley to put their hand up to join the first Youth Governance Committee for Youth Space Latrobe.

The Committee will help set an agenda, drive change and give voice to priority issues for young people in Morwell and surrounding communities, forming part of the Labor Government’s $4.3 million Youth Space Latrobe.

Work is currently underway to find a permanent home for the space, with a grand opening expected in the coming months.

In the meantime, the call is being made for 14 driven and passionate people aged 15 to 25 to become part of the Youth Governance Committee.

They will be supported by mentors and a part-time Youth Space staff member when needed.

Training will also be provided in areas like how a committee operates, budgeting and finance, communication and advocacy, presentation techniques and social media.

Committee members will be responsible for ensuring young people are engaged in the governance of the space and shape the types of programs and services to be delivered.

In July, the YMCA was appointed to run the centre, in partnership with another nine organisations.

The Youth Space Latrobe consortia consists of Berry Street, Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network, Scouts Victoria, Quantum Support Services, Latrobe Youth Voices, Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency, the Gathering Place, AGL Loy Yang and Gipps Sport, led by the YMCA.

The Labor Government is amplifying the voices of young people and ensuring their involvement in decisions that impact on them – a key commitment of the Youth Policy: Building Stronger Youth Engagement in Victoria.

Applications close on 31 August, 2018. For more information, visit lva.vic.gov.au/youth-space-latrobe.
