This National Volunteer Week (20 to 26 May), we recognise and thank our volunteers for the vital role they play in our lives and the significant contribution they make to South Gippsland.

South Gippsland volunteers

Some statistics:

  • 14% of Australians volunteer
  • 13% of Victorians volunteer
  • 22% of South Gippslanders volunteer

South Gippsland is extremely lucky to have so many people who actively volunteer in our community. Volunteers help to make our communities better and provide valuable opportunities for people to come together to meet and to connect.

Thank you to everyone in our community who chooses to volunteer. If you know a volunteer, say 'thank you' to them this week for all their hard work. Volunteering Awards 2024

The 2024 Volunteering Awards are now open for nominations. The Volunteering Awards are an opportunity to recognise and thank Victorian Volunteers for the incredible contributions they make to our local communities. There are a number of award categories and a handful of information sessions to help you submit your nomination. Submissions close Monday 22 July 2024.

Local government elections 2024

A new election page has been added to Council's website to assist the community to prepare for this process. The page contains details about becoming a candidate, how to enrol, how voting works and so much more.

Detox Your Home

Drop off your household chemicals for FREE at the Wonthaggi Transfer Station. The Detox Your Home event is taking place Saturday 8 June from 9.00am - bookings are essential. Burning off

Lately there has been large amounts of wood debris being burnt off causing large amounts of smoke pollution in our regional areas. When burning off, please and comply with CFA and Council requirements.

Community engagement

Marinus Link wants to hear from you

Marinus Link's Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Effects Statement (EIS/EES) and draft Planning Scheme Amendment (PSA) will be on public exhibition from 31 May - 12 July 2024. They will be hosting drop-in sessions through Gippsland to answer questions and provide information on the documents. The first sessions will be held at:

  • Mirboo North landholder drop-in: Tuesday 4 June (10.00am - 12.00pm)
  • Mirboo North community drop-in: Tuesday 4 June (5.00pm - 7.00pm)
  • Fish Creek community drop in: Wednesday 5 June (1.00pm - 3.00pm)
  • Dumbalk landholder drop in: Thursday 6 June (10.00am - 12.00pm)
  • Dumbalk community drop in: Thursday 6 June (5.00pm - 7.00pm)

Other sessions to follow are in Sandy Point, Churchill and Meeniyan. If you are unable to attend the in-person drop-in sessions, two webinars will also be available.

Have Your Say on VicGrid's Draft Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Community Benefit Plan

VicGrid is developing a Community Benefit Plan and your feedback is needed to ensure it hits the mark for local people and communities. Victoria is currently undergoing a transition to renewable energy, replacing fossil fuels, such as coal and gas, with renewable energy resources such as solar and wind, to generate affordable and sustainable energy for the future.

Loch Village Food and Wine Festival

Save the date! The Loch Village Food and Wine Festival is happening Sunday 9 June from 10.00am to 3.00pm. Meet the people behind our wineries, breweries, great produce and eateries, celebrating some of what South Gippsland has to offer. Enjoy beer and wine tastings, local restaurant pop-ups, international food trucks, live music and the festival vibes before exploring the historical village. Funding opportunities

Woolworth Pick Fresh Play Fresh Netball Grants

Woolworths Pick Fresh Play Fresh Grants, support grassroots netball clubs and associations across Australia. Over the past six years, the funding stream has provided support to over 311 netball clubs across the country.

Grants of up to $8,000 are available as well as $20,000 for the People's Choice Award. This is a funding opportunity your netball club won't want to miss. Submissions close 11.59pm Sunday 7 July. Telstra Footy Country Grants

Applications are now open for Telstra Footy Country Grants. Local footy clubs across Australia will have the opportunity to apply for grants up to $20,000 to help strengthen, sustain and grow local footy in three strategic areas:

  • Grow and assist volunteer capacity
  • Grow and diversify participation
  • Improve club environments and experiences
