Bass Coast Building Permit Activity Soars

April 2006 was another billion dollar month for the Victorian Building industry, according to figures just released by the Building Commission.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 13th June 2006 - Back to News

Bass Coast topped the list of four rural municipalities showing a significant improvement in the value of building permits issued, compared to the same time last year.

Bass Coast experienced a 79 per cent increase, with $18.5 million worth of building permits issued in the Shire, leading the way from Wellington Shire (71 per cent increase), Wodonga and South Gippsland (both with a 59 per cent increase).

Council’s Director of Planning and Environment, Andrew Mason, said these figures demonstrated the high levels of building activity in the shire.

"This is a very important industry in Bass Coast," said Mr Mason.

"And as these figures show, the value of building works in the area is rising significantly."

Council’s Building Services Manager, Stephen Rosendale, said the figures were impressive, but not entirely unexpected.

"Council’s building department is extremely busy, so I’m not surprised to see this kind of increase," said Mr Rosendale.

Across Victoria, over 7,000 building permits were issued. Six of the top 20 building permits issued for April were for work in rural Victoria.

Building Commissioner, Tony Arnel said this was very encouraging.

"This highlights the importance of rural building work to the overall strength of the Victorian building industry," said Mr Arnel.

"Results like these reinforce the attractiveness of living and working in provincial Victoria and show that significant gains are being made in these areas."
