Frisbee Golf Coming To Bass CoastFrisbee golf, otherwise known as disc golf, is a sport that is taking the world by storm and is now coming to Bass Coast. By Bass Coast - 17th July 2014 - Back to News The final project for the Living Healthy Bass Coast – Healthy Communities Initiative, the nine-hole golf course is expected to be installed between 4 and 15 August at the Blue Gum Reserve in Cowes.
The course has been designed by a team of disc golf experts from the Melbourne Disc Golf Club, and takes into consideration the surrounding environment.
Thompson Ward Councillor, Andrew Phillips, said more people were taking up recreational activities, such as Frisbee golf, in an effort to improve their health and quality of life.
"Frisbee golf is another opportunity for both the community and visitors to take part in, with the course accessible for all ages and can be enjoyed by everyone, no matter their ability," Cr Phillips said.
"The frisbee golf course is free to the public, can be used all year round, is low maintenance, and environmentally sound.
"Whether people wish to take part in friendly competition with others, or just have a go at a new activity, Frisbee golf can be a lot of fun no matter your age or skill level."
Due to the Blue Gum Reserve being a multi-purpose area, including an off leash dog zone, careful consideration has been given to the course design ensuring it does not impede on the space of other users.
In 2013-14, Frisbee golf sessions and clinics were run throughout Bass Coast Shire in schools, after school programs, YMCAs and at local events to familiarise the community with the game of Frisbee golf.
Consultants and professional disc golfers from Melbourne Disc Golf Club have also worked closely with Council in the development of the course.
So what is Frisbee golf?
Frisbee golf is played much like traditional golf; however instead of a ball and clubs, players use a Frisbee.
The sport was formalised in the 1970s, and is similar to the traditional game of golf, with the aim of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes.
The Frisbee is thrown from a tee area to an elevated metal basket (the hole).
As a player progresses down the fairway, they must make each consecutive shot from the place the previous shot landed.
Well designed Frisbee golf courses are environmentally friendly and utilise an area’s existing topography.
Varied terrain is an advantage. Trees, shrubs, hills, creeks and lakes offer more obstacles and challenge to a course.
There is no clear-cutting of trees, grading of land, costly fertilizer, or mowing maintenance necessary.
Frisbee golf provides upper and lower body conditioning, aerobic exercise, and promotes a combination of physical and mental abilities that allow very little risk of physical injury.
