New Morwell Central Preschool opens

The new Morwell Central Preschool in Maryvale Crescent opened its doors to preschoolers this week.

Keys to the new preschool were officially handed over to Council last Thursday by Brett Smart, Building Manager RJ Low Pty Ltd, though staff and the preschool committee had been creating a welcoming atmosphere for the arrival of the children for some days.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said the new state-of-the-art building provided a wonderful learning environment for young people. "It’s going to a very child-friendly experience attending this facility," Cr Middlemiss said.

The completion of the new preschool follows a year where preschoolers were co-located at the Elizabeth Wilmot Preschool, after having to vacate their old premises which had reached the end of their useful life near the Latrobe Regional Gallery, and to make way for Morwell’s new Justice Precinct.

"I’d like to thank the staff and committee at Elizabeth Wilmot for hosting Morwell Central during the past year, and also thank parents and staff at Morwell Central for their patience while the new preschool premises were built," Cr Middlemiss said.

Preschool Committee President, Louise Law, said the facilities were wonderful and the new building offered so many advantages over the previous facility.

"The wash-up area is great, the kitchen is twice the size of what we had at the previous site, and the whole building is so light and bright. We’re also very impressed with having a good sized storeroom which was sorely lacking at the previous facility. It’s all so wonderfully different from the previous facility," Ms Law said.

Preschool Director, Natasha Magnuson said two groups of four-year-olds and one group of three-year-olds were commencing preschool at the premises this term. "The play space and playground will be a great asset in creating a welcoming and learning environment. It’s also going to be so much easier to take children on excursions, having enough room near the facility to accommodate transport for the children on those occasions," Ms Magnuson said.

Councillor Darrell White said the new preschool was the realisation of an important asset for the future of communities south of the railway line in Morwell. "The committee and staff have been through some challenging times over the past year but they were determined that they didn’t want to be split up. It is great that they are now able to move into an excellent facility that will provide them with so many opportunities," Cr White said.

"One of those opportunities will be to forge a mutually beneficial relationship between the preschool children and their neighbours at Rose Garden Village. For example, we feel sure that the older folk and the very young potentially have a great deal to offer each other in companionship and through the whole learning experience," Cr White added.

Preschool places are still available at Morwell Central Preschool. For further information, contact Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
