‘The presence of things’ at the Latrobe Regional Gallery

A stunning exhibition titled ‘The presence of things: sense, veneer and guise’ is currently on show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery.

By Latrobe City Council - 11th July 2006 - Back to News

The exhibition brings together new works by 14 Australian artists and crafts practitioners created in response to study undertaken on the embroidery and lace collections of the Embroiderers Guild, Victoria.

Latrobe Regional Gallery’s acting curator, Sherryn Vardy, said that the guild’s textile collection was considered to be one of the most important in Australia, and included 3000 pieces from around the world, covering a variety of historical eras and techniques.

"New works integrating woven, embroidered and printed textiles, glass, ceramics and jewellery, cut paper, metalwork, inlay and printmaking, are exhibited alongside the historic pieces of embroidery and lace from which the artists drew inspiration. Traditional techniques, patterns, motifs and materials are utilised by the artists and transformed into unique and contemporary works of art," Ms Vardy explained.

"A piece by Nicola Cerini, responds to a textile sampler from Northern Europe. The original work was created in the early 1900s by a student learning a variety of needlework techniques over a number of months, with one lesson stitched to the next. Cerini’s new work, called ‘Sampler’ brings fragments and motifs from a variety of items in the Guild’s collection to create a textile ‘book’ documenting her new ideas and inspiration.

"In another example, Joungmee Do uses the traditional Korean metal technique of lybsa to handcraft sculptural forms that embody the thoughts she has of her parents. The artist’s medium contrasts to the soft silk and threads of the original work that inspired her. Imagery of fish, butterflies and footprints, symbolising ideas of family, bring together the new and old works by Do and the original embroiderer, separated by almost two centuries," Ms Vardy said.

Artists whose works feature in the exhibition include Rina Bernabei and Kelly Freeman (bernabeifreeman), Julie Blyfield, Nicola Cerini, Kate Cotching, Jill Dickson, Joungmee Do, Laura Healey, Melanie Hill, Gretchen Hillhouse, Julie Shepherd, Lesley Uren, Nicole Welch and Ilka White.

"This wonderful exhibiton curated by Stephen Gallagher with the Embroiderers’ Guild and toured by NETS Victoria continues until Sunday 6 August," Ms Vardy concluded.

Participating artist Lesley Uren will present a talk on Tuesday 1 August. Coffee and tea will be served at 10.30 with the talk commencing at 11am at a cost of $5 or $3 concession (free for Friends members).

Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
