Council to ‘door knock’ in search for unregistered animals

East Gippsland Shire’s Community Laws Officers are set to begin a door knock campaign to track down unregistered dogs and cats.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 10th October 2005 - Back to News

Acting Manager Local Laws and Emergency Management Terry Lamshed said it was estimated there was a considerable number of unregistered pets throughout the Shire

"Cats and dogs are required by law to be registered and we will be issuing $210 penalty notices for those we find that are not," he said.

Mr Lamshed said that registrations and payments were due by 10 April this year.

"We had a good response but it soon became obvious that some people were avoiding the issue," he said.

"A courtesy letter was recently sent to owners advising that they had not registered their dog/cat with Council for the 2005 – 2006 period, as required by law.

"The letter also asked if the animal was deceased, left the area, changed ownership and for the owner to please notify the Community Laws Department to enable our database to be corrected."

"While we had a good response to this letter many remained unanswered and we know there are many animals that are now unaccounted for."

Mr Lamshed said the registration of pets was necessary and important for a number of reasons.

"Should an animal become lost or hurt it enables our officers to return it to its rightful owner," he said, "and if it is involved in an incident where there is injury, say to a child, it is vital for all parties to know whose dog or cat it is."

Mr Lamshed said the door knocking campaign would begin very soon.
