Alan Armstrong, of Cann River, and Dayna Leatham, of Orbost, each received a grant of $3,000 at a function conducted at the Shire’s Corporate Centre (Bairnsdale) today.

The program, which has been running for the past eight years, is designed to assist students in their tertiary education.

"East Gippsland students can be quite disadvantaged because of the distances involved in travelling to university," said Deputy Mayor, Cr Jane Rowe.

"This program assists students by helping to cover the accommodation costs while living away from home.

"Both students have displayed a desire to succeed in their chosen field and these grants should help make the transition to their new life away from home as stress-free as possible," Cr Rowe said.

Professor Brian Mackenzie, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Gippsland Campus, congratulated the Shire for taking an active role in helping its students make a successful foray into post-secondary education.

"We take great pride in the excellent working relationship we have with the East Gippsland Shire Council and the benefits it provides to students," Professor Mackenzie said.

"Regional students have extra hurdles to overcome in pursuit of their dreams and career aspirations – these scholarships help students turn these dreams into reality."

Three East Gippsland Shire / Monash University Gippsland Campus Scholarships are offered each year, while a fourth is made available in the event that an eligible applicant is Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander.

"It’s pleasing to have Council working in partnership with Monash University to offer these scholarships and support young people as they further their studies," Cr Rowe said.

Student details:

  • Alan Armstrong completed his VCE at Cann River P-12 College and is undertaking an Associate Degree in Business and Commerce.
  • Dayna Leatham completed her VCE at Orbost Secondary College and is undertaking a Bachelor of Nursing.
