Residents of Phillip Island can have their say about the future of 70 Chapel Street in Cowes.

By Bass Coast - 16th December 2011 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council is starting the statutory process to sell the land and is inviting submissions from the community before making a final decision.

At the Meeting of 14 December 2011, Council resolved to engage with the community about the proposal to sell this land. The intention is to use the proceeds from the sale to fund the development of the Cowes Cultural Precinct.
People have six weeks to make a submission on the proposal to sell this land.

Bass Coast Shire Council Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said the submissions could comment on any aspect of the sale. Council is looking at selling the land to help fund the development of the Cowes Cultural Precinct and create a social and cultural centre of town," said Mr Piasente.

"The vision is to improve access to arts and cultural events, learning opportunities and social activities, by developing what is already a successful hub of activity on the site.

"If anyone has a concern about the sale, the submission process is an opportunity to explain to us how of this sale would have an impact on the community. Council has extended the submission time due to the holiday period, so that the deadline for lodging a submission with Council is by Friday, 3 February 2012.

Anyone who nominates to present their submission in person will have the opportunity to address a Committee of Council formed for this purpose early in 2012.

Mr Piasente said that Council purchased the land at 70 Chapel Street fifteen years ago, with a view to developing it as public open space. In the interim the site has been used as an informal car park, but has had no wider public use," explained Mr Piasente.

"In recent years the Cowes Cultural Centre in Thompson Avenue has been a focal point for public activities. It is envisaged that proceeds from the sale of 70 Chapel Street would contribute to realising the development of a Cowes Cultural Precinct in Thompson Avenue, giving the community greater access to improved facilities.

"Plans for of the Town Square redevelopment, which is a part of the Cultural Precinct, are on display at the Cowes Cultural Centre and on our website."

For further enquiries on how to make a submission please contact David Wall, Bass Coast Shire Council’s Asset Management Coordinator, on 1300 BCOAST (266 278).
