Forum discusses ways of making Latrobe safer

Over sixty participants from a range of organisations and agencies gathered recently in Churchill to discuss major safety issues affecting Latrobe Valley residents.

By Latrobe City Council - 30th May 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Deputy Mayor, Cr Lisa Proctor, opened the forum and spoke about the need for a community commitment to promote safety for all.

"Representatives from community agencies as well as Police, Council and Government have committed to a joint effort to maintain our World Health Organisation accreditation as a ‘Safe Community’. Part of that commitment included working closely with all residents. Strategies discussed at this forum help with that commitment," Cr Proctor said.

Latrobe’s Manager Community Safety, Henk Harberts, said that the speakers at the forum covered a wide range of topics which addressed safety issues affecting the community.

"Latrobe’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Hancock presented a range of hospital data collected in recent years. The data shows that half the injuries presented at the emergency department take place in the home and a large number of these can be prevented.

"Ms Valerie Callister, Regional Director of the Department of Human Services, Gippsland, encouraged collaborative efforts by agencies to promote community safety and highlighted its importance to the wellbeing and health of the community.

"Other speakers included Bernie Marshall, Deputy Director of Crime Prevention Victoria who spoke about the state-wide program focussing on improving safety in our streets and neighbourhoods, safety in the home, preventing family violence and reducing youth offences and violence," Mr Harberts continued.

"Latrobe Police Inspector Chris Notman talked about the Latrobe Local Safety Committee, a partnership group which advises and coordinates safety initiatives in Latrobe City.

"Road Safety Officer with Mornington Shire Council, Robin Tiffany spoke about local road safety initiatives including school programs and neighbourhood initiatives focussed on speed and young drivers," Mr Harberts said.

The afternoon workshops featured crime and violence, safety and injury, road safety and the abuse of alcohol and drugs.

Mr Harberts said that the community must take responsibility for safety at a personal, family, neighbourhood and organisational level. "As individuals we can work together to do this. The agencies who came to this forum will now work on developing and implementing an effective communications strategy," Mr Harberts explained.
