Coalville Road Footpath Provides Safer Access To Reserve

The first stage of a footpath project that will link the community at the southern end of Coalville Road to the existing footpath system near the High Street bridge over the Princes Freeway in Moe, is underway.

Tree removal, earthworks and kerb and channel works have been undertaken on a section of roadside between Cemetery Road and the Edward Hunter Reserve, with the concrete footpath to be poured in the next few days.

Latrobe City councillor, Lisa Price, said numerous positive comments have already been received about the works, from nearby residents who regularly walk to the nearby Edward Hunter Reserve.

"Council recognised some years ago the concerns of local residents wanting to access the bushland reserve, who were walking along the edge of a relatively busy road without a designated footpath.

"Unfortunately there was no easy, quick solution, as alternatives involved tree removal, earthworks, permit applications and liaison with various government departments. Street lighting also had to be relocated as part of the works to ensure the area was adequately lit," Cr Price said.

"A number of options were discussed with the community and it was generally agreed that the preferred option was to run the path along the eastern side of the road and provide separation with kerb and channel.

"One of the issues council had to address was the removal of roadside native vegetation. The design proposal required planning approval and the need to provide native vegetation offsets at another site.

"The removal of native vegetation was able to be kept to a minimum, and I’m happy to say that that in a few days the footpath will be able to be used by the community.

"The footpath will not only provide a safer environment for pedestrians to access the Edward Hunter Reserve, but will also provide a better and safer access to the outdoor pool and the Moe CBD," Cr Price added.
