Funding provided for bike paths in LatrobeLatrobe City’s roads will soon be made even safer for cyclists. By Latrobe Shire Council - 6th August 2004 - Back to News Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins, recently announced that $126,000 in funding for on-road and off-road bike paths will be allocated to the municipality as part of the 2004-2005 Putting Families First Budget.
Mr Jenkins explained that $59,000 will be spent extending the off road bike path network in Davidson Street from Latrobe Crescent to Park Lane and $67,000 will be spent on marking and signing on-road bike lanes in the township.
"We will be using this funding to install signs, road markings and kerb extensions to the existing on-road bike lane on Kay Street. In addition, line marking and signage will be added to the off-road bike paths on Park Lane, Duncan Cameron Reserve and Traralgon Creek," Mr Jenkins said.
"These new bicycle lanes and paths will improve safety for people who choose to cycle by providing them with a visible, designated space on and beside our roads. On-road bicycle lanes also remind drivers of the need to look out for cyclists and share the road more cooperatively," Mr Jenkins added.
The announcement of the funding will complement the work Latrobe City Council is currently conducting on on-road and off-road bicycle paths throughout the municipality.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Council has already begun construction of new bicycle paths in Traralgon and Morwell and is also in the process of creating a series of bicycle friendly maps.
"The maps will identify current bike paths and bicycle lanes which can be used in conjunction with quieter roads in the municipality to plan an enjoyable ride across town or a safe route to school or work. A coloured plan for the Traralgon area depicting the existing and proposed cycle routes is already available and can be obtained from the Citizen Service desk at the Traralgon Civic Centre," Cr White said.
"A number of cycle paths have been constructed throughout Latrobe City in recent years. A 2.5m wide off-road shared cycle path was recently constructed in Davidson Street linking the tennis courts and the existing path along Traralgon Creek, and other paths have also been constructed through Freeman Park Estate and along Hazelwood Road. Further construction work is also taking place in Bank Street where a new off-road cycle path is currently being constructed, linking Hazelwood Road to the existing path."
Cr White said that the recently announced funding will help make Latrobe’s roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists and will encourage more people to actively engage in healthy lifestyle practices.
"The funding will provide further opportunities to construct bicycle facilities throughout the municipality, making Latrobe’s bicycle paths more accessible and encouraging more people to walk or ride to their intended destination," Cr White concluded.
