Take Care Over Busy Long WeekendWith a busy weekend expected over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, Bass Coast Shire Council is urging everyone to take care. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 26th October 2007 - Back to News Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said there were a number of areas where special care was needed.
Chill Island
"We are really focusing on pedestrian safety over the weekend, particularly around the event on Churchill Island," said Mr Angarane.
"People have been encouraged to use alternative methods to get to Chill Island, to keep the number of cars to a minimum.
"So we are expecting a high volume of people on foot or bicycles," Mr Angarane continued.
"We want motorists to be aware of this, particularly around the peak times of 11am to1pm, and from 7pm onwards.
"With daylight saving, the event will end around dusk. That can be a difficult time for drivers, particularly in terms of being able to clearly see pedestrians walking on the side of the road," said Mr Angarane.
Mr Angarane said the intersection onto Phillip Island Road from Churchill Island would be controlled at peak times.
A number of other events over the weekend will also impact on traffic.
Harley Owners Group rally
"There is the Harley Owners Group rally around the Island on Saturday," informed Mr Angarane.
"The riders will leave from the Adventure Park resort at 10.30am. The rally goes along Ventnor Road to the Nobbies Centre, and then travels down Back Beach Road and back onto Phillip Island Road.
"From there, the bikes will go to Rhyll, via the Rhyll Newhaven Road, and back into Cowes along the Cowes-Rhyll Road," Mr Angarane explained.
"It’s expected they’ll arrive at The Esplanade around midday, where people will have a chance to get up close and inspect the bikes."
"This is a great event, but the high number of bikes will be an issue for any cars travelling on those roads. I’d recommend avoiding the rally route between 10.30am and midday if possible."
The display of bikes on The Esplanade will mean changed traffic conditions and some street closures in Cowes.
"This will also apply for the ‘show and shine’ in The Esplanade with the Triumph Sports Owners Association on Sunday from 10am," reminded Mr Angarane.
Mr Angarane also explained there would be changed traffic conditions around San Remo on Sunday.
San Remo Fishing Village Festival
"Foreshore car parking in San Remo will be closed for the San Remo Fishing Village Festival, which will impact on traffic conditions," said Mr Angarane.
"The Festival runs from 9am until 4pm.
"With the number of events on around the Shire, motorists can expect to encounter heavier than normal traffic," said Mr Angarane.
"People do need to be careful and patient.
"We’re encouraging people to plan their trips and take these events into consideration," Mr Angarane continued.
"Everyone should allow a little extra time for getting around and remember to have some snacks and water in the car, in case there are unexpected delays on the roads."
