New Latrobe City Mayor elected

Councillor Tony Zimora was elected Latrobe City mayor and Councillor David Wilson elected Latrobe City deputy mayor at Monday night’s special council meeting.

Cr Zimora has been a Latrobe City councillor since elected representation was re-established in the municipality in 1997, but takes on his first term as mayor.

Cr Zimora paid tribute to outgoing mayor Cr Lisa Price on the great work undertaken during her twelve-month’s term as municipal leader.

"During Cr Price’s term as mayor, council has worked extremely well together in the interests of the community to deliver good governance. We have acted with one united voice to lobby government and administer our municipality to the maximum benefit of our residents. I certainly intend to continue the good work Cr Price has initiated during her term of leadership," Cr Zimora said.

Cr Zimora said he anticipated that council’s role in liaising with government and government agencies was likely to intensify following the recent state election.

"A new era for our region has now begun and Latrobe City looks forward to a continued good relationship with our federal parliamentary representatives and working with our newly elected state members of parliament.

"However, it is also vital that we as municipal leaders work even harder to further the interests of our region with the Brack’s government. To ensure we are not disadvantaged, council will have to become an even stronger voice for the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland, now that there are no longer lower house members in the government ranks representing our region," Cr Zimora said.

"On a personal note, taking on the role of mayor will be challenging and exciting for me. From my own experiences over the years I know Latrobe City to be in excellent shape as an organisation; and I look forward to working with my fellow councillors, together with the CEO and staff during the next twelve-months to maximise the potential of Latrobe," Cr Zimora added.
