Latrobe’S Strengths Highlighted In New Wellbeing Report

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the release of Community Indicators Victoria (CIV), a free new website that uses 80 indicators to measure the wellbeing of local communities.

Community wellbeing indicators provide information about a broad range of social, economic, environmental, cultural and political issues that are important to local communities and citizens.

According to Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora, the Wellbeing Reports are available for all Victorian municipalities, and can be customised and accessed by everyone.

"The CIV Wellbeing Report for Latrobe shows that as a community we are happy with our work-life balance and our level of social support; we use our maternal and child health facilities frequently, and we are recycling more waste than many other Victorian communities. Our region’s migrant history is reflected in our high acceptance level of culturally diverse societies and we are also volunteering more than we used to. Overall, Latrobe and our Gippsland neighbours rate our wellbeing as the highest in the state, and that must be good news," Cr Zimora said.

"As well as highlighting our strengths, the community indicators afford us an opportunity as a whole community to better understand and respond to a range of local issues and challenges.

"As part of our role is to plan for a better future, having instant access to this data improves our knowledge and ability to do this more effectively.

"These indicators will be a powerful tool enabling council to build on its current planning processes and work together with local communities to identify needs and guide solutions. Using this data, we can better allocate resources to progress shared goals and priorities agreed with community groups, residents or businesses," Cr Zimora explained.

Cr Zimora said that tracking change and improvement over time was an important way of measuring progress, evaluating program effectiveness and focussing on practical results.

"But it must also be remembered that all Victorian communities are diverse and Latrobe City has some unique characteristics and needs that differentiate us from other areas. Whilst it is useful to be able to compare and contrast our results with that of our neighbours and the rest of the state, we must focus on what is primarily best for us in our own community," Cr Zimora said.

"We hope this data will be used responsibly by all to improve community wellbeing. Knowledge and debate are important, and we hope this information forges new partnerships and strengthens existing ones so we can all work together to set goals, develop action plans and improve our healthy development as a community over time," Cr Zimora concluded.
