‘Keep Fit, Don’t sit’ program launched for 2006The 2006 ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program was launched on Wednesday by Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price and Latrobe Valley Pacers’ star Vashon Weaver at ceremony held at Liddiard Road Primary School. By Latrobe City Council - 30th March 2006 - Back to News Now in its tenth year of operation, the aim of the ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program is to motivate and educate students about the benefits of regular physical activity
"The program is designed to encourage primary school students to stay fit and healthy by keeping a weekly tally of the physical exercise they participate in. As such, council is extremely pleased to again be supporting the ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program," Cr Price said.
"If we can encourage students’ interest in an active lifestyle while they’re young, their interest and motivation in staying active can grown with them and help them to experience an overall better quality of life," Cr Price said.
As a part of the program, grade 3 and 4 primary school students across Latrobe City and neighbouring areas will be visited by Latrobe City Pacers star Vashon Weaver and supported by other Pacers’ players.
"The Latrobe Valley Pacers players are certainly great role models in our community. They are held in great respect by younger people. As such, they are the ideal ambassadors to encourage physical activity in our schools," Cr Price said.
"Educating the younger members of our community on the benefits of an active lifestyle and teaching them solid team working skills will provide significant benefits for the entire community in years to come."
Mr Weaver said the ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program aims to engage with participants through games, physical education, listening programs and team building activities. "The students are given a tally sheet to record what physical activity they partake in over a two-week period," he explained.
"This year, the program also focuses on a balanced schooling career, encouraging pupil’s academic and social attitudes as well as their participation in physical exercise," Mr Weaver said.
Last year, Sacred Heart Primary School was awarded first place in the overall schools' challenge with the school's students participating in an average of 1223 minutes of physical activity over a two-week period.
In the individual student's challenge, Jessica Bodinnar from Grey Street Primary School tallied an impressive 2995 minutes of activity during the program, winning her first place.
The ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program is supported by International Power Hazelwood, Latrobe City, Latrobe City Pacers, and Gippsport.
