Building Inclusive Rural Communities By deaf access VICTORIA - Gippsland Region - 26th September 2003 - Back to News What is deaf access VICTORIA?
deaf access VICTORIA supports rural and regional communities to plan and develop strategies that enable deaf and hard of hearing people to become more included in their local community.
The program aims to produce real change in local communities that benefit deaf and hard of hearing people.
deaf access VICTORIA replaces the former community service known as Deaf Infolink - Gippsland, and expands on the work undertaken in that program.
There are five deaf access VICTORIA workers situated in rural Victoria. These workers plan and develop projects in many areas, including:
· access and advocacy planning;
· accommodation and housing;
· communication,
· information and interpreting;
· community awareness;
· education and training;
· sport, recreation and the arts; and
· transport.
deaf access VICTORIA fulfils these goals by:
· Assisting community organisations and services to work more effectively with deaf and hard of hearing people.
· Raising awareness in the local community about the issues and needs of deaf and hard of hearing people.
· Providing information relating to deafness or hearing loss to: deaf and hard of hearing people; their families or carers; as well as to services that work with deaf and hard of hearing people; and to the general community.
Who can use deaf access VICTORIA?
deaf access VICTORIA provides free support across rural and regional Victoria to all members of the community and service organisations.
