Transport Project Aims To Connect Region

East Gippsland Shire Council, in partnership with Wellington Shire Council, will be focusing on various transport needs for the region over the next two years as part of the "Let’s GET (Gippsland East Transport) Connected Project".

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 14th April 2004 - Back to News

The Let’s GET Connected Project aims to develop creative sustainable solutions to transport disadvantage in East Gippsland and Wellington Shires, within a capacity building framework.

Both Shires were successful in obtaining State Government funding for two Transport Project Officers. The Shires are two of the three largest municipalities in the state, and both with extremely limited transport infrastructure.

"The Project will map all existing transport services in both municipalities," said East Gippsland Shire Project Officer, Rhonda James.

"Once this has been completed a Transport Directory will be produced. Following this, local communities will be surveyed to ascertain what the transport needs and issues are for people residing in both municipalities.

"Local communities, groups, agencies, services, key stakeholders and businesses will be engaged throughout the project to develop practical solutions, form strong partnerships and working groups that can support and sustain creative solutions and make the best use of local resources for the greatest on-going benefit of communities," she said.

Key stakeholders will include transport providers, government departments, funding bodies, health services, education, seniors, youth and those with disabilities.

"To enable the success of this project community input will be sought, in particular from small communities who have historical knowledge, strong local connections and a long term commitment to improving services," Rhonda said.
