The proposed exploration license encompasses approximately 70% of the township of Traralgon.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley said that the objection would be based on a range of concerns.

"The proposed exploration licence appears to cover approximately 70% of the township of Traralgon. It appears to encompass areas of private housing, significant community infrastructure including schools and recreational facilities, a large number of businesses including industry, retail, and service providers, as well as a wide range of government departments and agencies," Mr Buckley explained.

"The proposed exploration licence affects a thriving regional community where people live, work and play and provides uncertainty to residents, business owners and the region. The proposed exploration area has not previously been considered for mining by the Department of Primary Industries. In fact, Framework for the Future and the LV2100 Coal Resource Project do not indicate the township of Traralgon as a highly rated coal area.

Mr Buckley advised that Latrobe City was concerned that an application for an exploration license over a regional centre has been processed by the Department of Primary Industries to the point of advertising.

"We will certainly be seeking clarification on the Department’s mechanisms to filter exploration licence applications.

"I have to say that I am surprised and disappointed that Latrobe City, as the responsible local authority, has not been formally advised by the Department of this application; but first reads about it in a local newspaper advertisement," Mr Buckley concluded.
