Labour Day Long Weekend Set To Be BusyLabour Day long weekend is traditionally one of the busiest weekends for Bass Coast. This year, a number of events across the Shire look set to continue that trend. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 2nd March 2007 - Back to News Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane said that for many people, the weekend was almost like the finale of the summer holidays.
"If the current warm weather continues, we are expecting large numbers of people to come down over the three days.
"In addition, there are quite a few events happening across the Shire."
Mr Angarane said a large crowd is expected to attend the official opening of the new National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Friday March 9.
"The Premier will be officially opening the Museum in the morning, but there are activities happening on the site across the whole day," Mr Angarane confirmed.
"We are expecting that this will generate quite a lot of traffic late on Friday afternoon, as cars leave the Museum and attempt to turn onto Phillip Island Road.
"This will coincide with the build up of visitor traffic arriving on the Island for the long weekend," said Mr Angarane.
"We’ll certainly be looking closely at the traffic management around this area and will look for police support if necessary.
"I’d advise anyone who doesn’t need to be travelling to avoid Phillip Island Road late on Friday afternoon."
Also running from March 9 to 11 is the Shannon’s Classic Cars event.
"Support for this event is growing rapidly," said Mr Angarane.
"It is becoming a feature event at the track and we are expecting significant numbers over the three days."
Mr Angarane said traffic around the Grand Prix Circuit was expected to be busiest on Sunday afternoon, as patrons left the event.
"As always, we recommend that people avoid Back Beach Road and Phillip Island Road on Sunday afternoon if possible," advised Mr Angarane.
"As this is a long weekend, we might avoid the usual combination of patrons leaving the event coinciding with visitors leaving the Island at the end of the weekend.
"Hopefully this will help to keep the traffic flowing."
The events over the weekend are not confined to Phillip Island. The Inverloch Jazz Festival is taking place from Friday March 9 until Monday March 12 and this should see big crowds travelling through to Inverloch.
Mr Angarane said he hoped everyone would get out and enjoy the events and attractions on offer over the weekend.
"It’s certainly going to be a busy time, with lots of great things for people to do," said Mr Angarane.
"We’d just like people to be aware of these events and some of the peak times, so they can plan their travel accordingly.
"And as usual, we encourage everyone who is travelling to make sure they have plenty of water in the car and some snacks, in case of unexpected delays."
