2013-2014 Draft Budget Released For Public CommentLatrobe City Council’s 2013-2014 draft budget has been released for comment. The budget has an increased capital works program whilst continuing to deliver quality services and programs. By Latrobe City - 26th June 2013 - Back to News Latrobe City Council’s deputy mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that the budget was aligned with the new look Council Plan to signal the new direction that Council wanted to take.
"We have been careful to ensure that our current level of service delivery is maintained but that we act in a financially responsible way. I think the community will see that we have delivered a budget that allows for much needed capital works but not at the expense of a big rate rise. The rate increase is 4.51%. In addition, there is a 0.74% increase associated with waste charges and state government landfill levies.
"We have managed to achieve this low rate rise despite some unforeseen burdens on our expenditure such as the defined benefits scheme superannuation payment and increased utility costs," Cr Gibson said.
"Notable capital works expenditure includes $4.5m for the local roads reseal program, $3.5m for the Hyland Highway future landfill cell construction, $2.3m for the completion of the Moe Outdoor Pool redevelopment $2.1m to upgrade the Latrobe Regional Airport, and $1.1m for drainage upgrades across the municipality.
"There are, of course, many other areas of capital expenditure across recreation, community infrastructure, town centre works, parks and playgrounds and the environment. It is vital that we spend in these areas to maintain our infrastructure. Investing in a strong capital works programs is investing in our future," Cr Gibson said.
"We are also pleased to be able to introduce a new focus on planning in this budget with the introduction of a new manager of statutory planning to focus on improvements to the planning process and timeframes. There will also be increased staff on the frontline to make sure the new manager is well supported to deliver this key function of the organisation.
"Overall, this is a prudent budget that maintains our focus on delivering essential infrastructure improvements and quality services whilst not putting too much pressure on the hip pocket of the ratepayers," Cr Gibson concluded.
The draft budget will be open for public submission until close of business Wednesday 24 July 2013. Copies of the draft budget are available for inspection at Latrobe City service centres or on council’s website at www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
The Council will meet to consider any written submissions in relation to the 2012/2013 budget at 5.30pm on Monday 29 July 2013 in the Nambur Wariga meeting room, at the corporate headquarters Morwell.
