on the replacement of inappropriate street trees in their roads.

Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora said that the new consultation system was designed to ensure that residents were able to have their say on the issue of trees outside their properties.

"Council has initiated this new way of working with the local community to ensure that everyone has a say. We gave out surveys to all residents in the affected streets and have now collected them back and collated the results. In general, most residents have agreed with the suggestion to replace the inappropriate trees.

"We are particularly pleased that these surveys have allowed us to closely gauge opinion from residents in each street affected by the inappropriate street tree removal program. We know that trees can be a highly emotive issue and we want to work closely with the community to ensure the program is working well," Cr Zimora explained.

Council’s acting manager infrastructure operations, Grantley Switzer, said that the surveys showed the vast majority of residents accepted that inappropriate types of street trees needed to be replaced.

"Many of the survey results showed that between 90% and 100% of residents accepted that the trees in their street should be replaced. This may be because the trees have grown too high and threaten overhead cables, they may be allergenic or their root systems may cause cracking in the pavement.

"Removal of these inappropriate trees will be undertaken throughout September and October and all trees replaced with an appropriate species within seven working days of their removal," Mr Switzer concluded.
