Latrobe City Council has delivered a World Bowls-approved synthetic bowling green for the Churchill community which will provide greater access for local bowlers and a competition-ready facility.

Latrobe City Council’s chief executive officer, Gary Van Driel, said that the project added yet another top class sporting facility to Latrobe City’s assets.

"Providing a bowling green of this quality is not just a benefit to the local Churchill bowling community but to the wider Latrobe City community. This new facility will now allow the Churchill Bowling Club to attract additional sporting events and competitions to the region.

"There has never been an outdoor bowling green in Churchill so this project has been about working with the community to deliver a facility designed with their needs in mind," Mr Van Driel said.

"The project consisted of the design and construction of a 40m x 40m synthetic bowling surface with automatic sub surface watering system, installation of bowling green perimeter turf, an access path from the carpark, security light poles, perimeter fencing and power and water supply.

"Having a top quality facility means that the club can now work on attracting additional club members and casual users, and can extended their playing time, to improve social wellbeing and physical fitness opportunities for members.

"Working with the Churchill Bowls Club throughout the project demonstrated their commitment to delivering this project with Council and provided them with the impetus to maintain and improve their club rooms to complement the delivery of the new synthetic green.

"It was a great collaborative effort," Mr Van Driel concluded.
