Latest Grants Help Local School Make History

Traralgon¡¦s Grey Street Primary School is preparing to share their history thanks to the latest round of grants through the Victorian Government¡¦s Local History Grants Program.

Member for Morwell, Russell Northe today said that Grey Street Primary School had received a $6,500 grant through the program to publish a book celebrating Grey Street Primary School¡¦s Centenary and digitization of photographs and documents.

¡§In March last year Grey Street Primary School celebrated its centenary, as the local member it was fantastic to have the opportunity to witness ex-students, teachers and staff in celebrations.

¡§Our schools, historical associations and community groups do a fantastic job in keeping the history of their towns alive, and creating new and exciting ways of presenting that information to the wider community,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§This funding is an outstanding opportunity for Grey Street Primary School to continue their work highlighting the joy and wealth of learning from exploring our educational and communities history.

„h Boolarra Public Cemetery Trust

„h Morwell Historical Society

„h Gippsland Immigration Park

„h Yallourn Association

„h Yinnar and District Community Association

¡§There are so many stories that have made Traralgon the place it is today, and I congratulate Grey Street Primary School for playing there part in capturing the history of their school.

¡§The local History Grants Program recognises the importance of keeping and sharing our local stories, which together help to tell the story of our state.¡¨

Mr Northe said the grant recognised the contribution of regional schools, historical associations and community groups in conserving and explaining the historical narration of the Latrobe Valley to both locals and visitors.

¡§The projects funded by the Local History Grants Program reflect the wealth of stories that chronicle the rich and diverse history of our region,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§These grants will ensure the many amazing stories of our past are preserved and shared with the community.¡¨

¡§Importantly, the program also recognises and showcases the important work our local community groups do all year round.¡¨

The Minister for the Arts, Heidi Victoria said ¡§the grants will give many Victorian regions the opportunity to delve deeper into their own communities and enhance their understanding of local history and culture¡¨.

This grant is among sixty-four grants made across the state which total almost $350,000.
